When it comes to saying “cheese,” do you find yourself shying away from the camera? Our smile can hold a big piece of our confidence and whether you’re feeling low from yellow teeth, chapped lips or anything between, it can have a huge impact on our happiness.

A smile is one of the first things we first notice when meeting a new person, according to statistics. This year, as we celebrate National Smile Month, don’t let your smile insecurities keep you from having a fun and memorable summer. Instead, take matters into your own hands and make it a personal goal to finally get that killer smile you’ve always wanted.

If you want your smile to be noticed for all the right reasons, here are 5 natural ways to help get you closer to your perfect smile:

1. Tackle stained teeth

There are many reasons our teeth turn yellow, including inadequate brushing, certain medications or just aging. Luckily, there are ways to turn teeth back to a pearly white state using products you probably already have at home.

Baking soda and table salt. To lift stains, put some baking soda and table salt on your toothbrush and brush your teeth.

Apple cider vinegar. Use apple cider vinegar as you would mouthwash, gargling each morning to lift stains on your teeth.

Banana peels. Using the inside of the banana peel, rub across your teeth for about two minutes. The minerals in the peel are absorbed into your teeth and help them appear whiter.

2. Don’t forget your gums

It’s the forgotten part of our smile, but the way our gums look can have a big impact on what other people see.

Floss daily. It’s not just another chore you can ignore, but flossing your teeth can help keep your gums healthy and prevent gum disease and gum loss.

Try oil pulling. It’s an ancient practice that’s been gaining traction over the past few years. Swishing oils, like coconut or sesame, in your mouth each morning is said to help promote healthy gums.

Take your Vitamin D. Studies show having healthy amounts of Vitamin D in your diet will help keep periodontal disease away.

3. Keep your breath fresh

Make sure your breath doesn’t kill someone one. Sure, bad breath won’t actually cause harm to someone else, but it can result in you losing friends, opportunities and happiness.

There are many ways you can help naturally improve your breath including drinking more water, eating more apples and cleaning your tongue.

4. Get healthy lips

Beautiful, soft lips can actually make a difference in your face and are essential for that killer smile. Our lips take a lot of abuse through the day – from braving the cold or humid air to kissing our kids ‘boo-boos, if you want to have the whole smile package, you need to care for your pout.

Drink water. If you have chapped or cracked lips, chances are you’re not drinking enough water – your lips BFF. Make sure you’re drinking at least 48 oz. each day and you’ll see a huge improvement in your lip look.

Hydrate with coconut oil. Some people swear by their lip balm, but if you’re looking for a more natural approach, coconut oil will do the trick just as well.

Sugar scrub. Mix some brown sugar with coconut oil and rub your lips with the mixture each night before bed to stimulate blood flow and remove dry skin.

5. Learn how to smile

One of the best and simplest things you can do to be on your way to achieving a pretty pout is learning how to smile. Sure, it may seem simple, you’ve been smiling since you were a baby, but if you’re looking to get that smile that lights up a room, practice what works for your face.

Take some time to smile at yourself in front of a mirror and see what you can do to make you feel even more fabulous. If you have yellow teeth, practice smiling in a way that doesn’t show a lot, but looks natural still. If you have thinner lips, smile with your teeth put together so your lips appear more full. Besides, smiling at yourself is just good for your soul, too.
